Windows Grills (Grids) 101

Many years ago, when homes were being made with what we now refer to as a colonial aesthetic in mind, grill/grid patterned glass was very popular and common. Today many homes in parts of the GTA still favor keeping that aesthetic alive.

However, the way it’s done now is a bit different. In the ye olde days, single panes of glass were cut and fastened between wooden dividers, creating what we now now as grill patterns. Although beautiful, this method was hardly energy efficient.

Today, we simulate this look by keeping a double or triple pane of glass whole and not partitioned. The grills will either sit in-between the panes, or rest on top of the glass, as well as in-between the panes. The two most popular types of grills are ⅝” flat grills and SDL’s (Simulated Divided Lines). There is a wide assortment of other choices as well.

When choosing a grill pattern it is important to consider the curb appeal of your home, and what aesthetic falls in line with the style of your home and your general neighborhood.
